Our Power is our Care, Our Power is our Presence!
Planning for the 2017 Annual OCCI Congress is in full swing and we are looking forward to a great event.
The OCCI Annual Congress is a gathering for professionals and stakeholders in community interpreting to:
·        learn about language access innovations and quality improvement initiatives
·        network with peers and build contacts across the sector
·        find out about new education and employment opportunities
·        hear from speakers about advancements in best practices for addressing language barriers in public service access and delivery
This year's event will highlight the integration of Healthcare Interpretation Network (HIN) and feature the first OCCI Interpreter Job Fair.
The OCCI Annual Congress also provides an exciting opportunity for organizations to showcase their services to interpretation professionals from across the province.

The Government of Canada is taking concrete measures to renew the Translation Bureau and make it a centre of excellence for linguistic services. These ongoing efforts are focusing on quality, innovation, adopting leading-edge practices and recruiting the best possible people. The creation of this role and the hiring of a Chief Quality Officer is an integral part of these efforts.

"A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by the BBC in connection with an incident involving the interpreter who watered down parts of President Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly that were critical of the Iranian regime."
The interpreter was severely criticized on social media but stood his ground by indicating, inter alia, that he didn’t feel he had the right to trash his own country on air.
Today, Statistics Canada released the 2016 census data on language showing an increasingly diverse linguistic landscape. Ontario receives over 50 percent of all immigrants to Canada so it is no surprise that nearly half of Canadians with a mother tongue other than English live in this province.
"Good morning. You’re under arrest." That pretty much tells the story of a Palestinian construction worker in Israel who was taken into custody for posting a picture of himself on Facebook last week. The photo showed the man leaning against a bulldozer, smiling, with a cigarette and a cup of coffee in one hand. Along with the picture, he wrote the words “Good morning” in Arabic.
"Life's Challenges allow us to grow. They push us to be better than we thought possible. Face challenges head on so you can grow into the best version of yourself."
